It's officially Fall. If you were wondering if you can still drink
white wine after Labor Day, well, if you like white wine then it should
be OK. I even like to remind myself of Summer with fruity crisp wines in
the dead of Winter. Do people still barbecue in the Winter? There is
your answer. Any other questions? You can submit them to us. We will
make up something that sounds about right.
It's happened! A few days in the 90's has gotten more folks to consider the other colors of the wine rainbow. White and Rose'
or even Green wines are great options in this heat. Even I had a period
when I considered Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc inferior and not to be
bothered with in my wine choosing calculus. Thank goodness there were
Chenin Blancs, Pinot Gris, and Pinot Blancs to win me back over to the
fairer colored wines. OK, it was Champagne that did the biggest part of
keeping me from being monochromatic in my wine choices. Now I am full
circle back into all nature of Chardonnay and have found new white
grapes, Falanghina, and Xarello to name a couple. That said, you can be
certain that I will be a touch insistent for you to try some of them
when I taste wine with you. As our tastings are free! you should do
yourself a favor and give one or two a go. The number of reformed and
new white wine drinkers is growing. With a little imagination the
colors available to you can expand into something rather vibrant and
truly pleasing. Until then, I have shackled the the heavy reds
until further notice. If you ask nicely, I might let some loose. No
worries though, this break from the heavy reds will foster bigger and
better reds in the future or the time-out for some young vintages might
just be what they needed.
New Favorites that are in the shop right now include:
I'm
also really fond of Robert Sinskey Vineyards. They're bio-dynamic, or
as their Vineyard Manager, Deb, who visited us, says, "Vodoo Organic".
It means that they are even a little more delicate with their vines
than the usual organic folks. The "Airies" Pinot Noir is one that
happens when the grapes that don't fit into their normal bottling are
too good to let go to other homes.

It's
SUMMER. Here in Wisconsin that only means we get more light in a day
for a little while (and subsequently less moon, thus the graphic). While
driving through Madison I noticed that on Lake Monona there was a water
show of some sort. There where half a dozen water skiers in some
formation. More noticeable was that they were all wearing some fairly
thick wet suites. Ahhh Summer in Wisconsin. What does all this mean for
wine? I guess it just means that wine doesn't go out of season as there
are wines for when it's hot and wines for when it's cooler and wines for
when you have company and some wines that are best kept for some
introspective time. As I like to direct folks to wines that go with the
foods and moods and climates of the moment, I am lost here except to
say, "Stop in and depending on your mood, your food, and the weather
that day, Nick and I will find something to hopefully enhance whatever
you are planning."
Notice that we've added a "Wine Archive" page in the wine
section. It was done to help me remember what I've written so I might
not repeat myself overly. However it might help you remember something
about a wine so you can find it again. Remember when I couldn't
remember? 'member? It also serves as a great place to hide some extra
special whisper word deals so cruising through it from time to time
might get you into some interesting savings on some of the wines hidden
in the nooks and crannies of the store. But don't do it yet. We didn't
hide a Whisper Word there and don't want to send you on a goose chase.
BTW,
did you know we can keep track of your purchase history? We only do it
if you are OK with it. We don't ask any information except your name and
we keep it on the register computer. That computer doesn't get to
frolic on the interweb, it's kept in the artificial light, away from
anything that might corrupt it. Well, I guess we might influence it
some, but I'm really saying. There is no data selling, mining, of
potential for hacking into the little list of purchases you've made. In
fact you could use a Verona Wine Cellar Alias if you like. Choose one
for yourself! At the shop feel free to be whoever you like. We will like
you pretty much no matter who that is.
